Some students in the region could receive extra help with technology for their studies.

First year and new transfer students starting their Fall Semester at Cal State Channel Islands could qualify for the loan of an iPad Air, Apple pencil and Apple Smart keyboard.

Cal State Channel Islands Interim President Richard Yao said the pandemic highlighted the need for tech and connectivity for students.

"We've seen students from historically under-represented and marginalized groups disproportionately impacted by COVID," he told KCLU.

"When COVID hit us, in March 2020, we saw a big need for technology and connectivity needs," said Yao. "When this opportunity came to provide an iPad or similar technology to all incoming first year and transfer students then we jumped at that."

"I do see this as a social justice issue, it's a big part of what we're trying to do," he added.

Caroline joined KCLU in October 2020. She won LA Press Club's Audio Journalist of the Year Award in 2022, 2023 and 2024.
