A group of high school students from Ventura County is collecting bikes to send to communities in Africa.

High School student Cade Raymond of Thousand Oaks says he saw firsthand, during a trip to Africa, that some school children had to walk up to 11 miles a day to attend school.

He’s been inspired to collect bikes – along with friends - to send to organizations in Tanzania, Namibia and Ghana, for Wheels To Africa.

"We collect bikes in all shapes and sizes, except rusty ones, and we raise money for a shipping container and send them to Africa and distribute them to impoverished communities," he told KCLU.

"There's a lot of rural communities. A bike really can be life-changing," Raymond said.

The collection takes place from 8:30 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. on Saturday August 7 at United Methodist Church, 1049 S Westlake Blvd, Westlake Village.

Caroline joined KCLU in October 2020. She won LA Press Club's Audio Journalist of the Year Award in 2022, 2023 and 2024.

Since joining the station she's also won 10 Golden Mike Awards, 6 Los Angeles Press Club Awards, 4 National Arts & Entertainment Journalism Awards and a Regional Edward R. Murrow Award for Excellence in Writing.

She started her broadcasting career in the UK, in both radio and television for BBC News, 95.8 Capital FM and Sky News and was awarded by Prince Philip for her services to radio and journalism in 2007.

She has lived in California for eleven years and is both an American and British citizen - and a very proud mom to her daughter, Elsie.
