Al Fresco Dining? Not Enough Room, Says One South Coast City

Curb space on Hollister Avenue in Goleta

While some cities are looking at allowing restaurants to reopen via al fresco dining setups in downtown areas, one South Coast city says it doesn't have enough space.

The city of Goleta says that its Old Town area lacks the curb space to offer the same kind of outdoor dining available in the city of Santa Barbara on State Street.

That doesn't mean that city officials have given up, but a new report says that Hollister Avenue just can't be shut down to create the same kind of pedestrian thoroughfare that's occupying 10 blocks of downtown Santa Barbara.

The report adds that Old Town Goleta walkways don't have enough curb space to offer table dining while simultaneously allowing a six foot distance between the diner and pedestrians.
