An impromptu memorial set up on the street near the scene of the November 2018 Borderline Bar and Grill attack which left 12 people dead.

A traffic collision has claimed the life of a man who was one of the heroes of the deadly 2018 Borderline Bar and Grill attack in Thousand Oaks.

Ventura County Sheriff's deputies say Matt Wennerstrom was riding his motorcycle when he collided with a car Saturday night on Lynn Road in Newbury Park. The 24-year-old man was pronounced dead at the scene.

Wennerstrom was one of the hundreds of people in the popular Thousand Oaks nightclub when a man stormed in, and opened fire. He helped dozens of people get out of the club safely.

The Thousand Oaks man pulled a number of people under tables at the club, and when he heard the gunman stop to reload, he used a barstool to break out some windows. It allowed dozens of people to escape from the nightclub.

12 people died as a result of the attack.
