There’s a warning out about some thieves who are not only targeting pickup trucks on the South Coast, they are going after a specific make and model.
Nearly a dozen early 2000 model Chevy Silverados have been stolen in the City of Oxnard since the beginning of the year. But, detectives say the thieves don’t actually want the vehicles. They are stealing them, and cutting off the catalytic converters. They sell the devices for the precious metals found inside of them.
Because the trucks have high ground clearance, it makes it easier to get underneath them and quickly cut off the air pollution control devices.
Detectives advise owners to park their vehicles in garages or well-lit areas, and use steering wheel locks. They say that ideally, owners should have a metal plate put over the catalytic converter to deter thieves.
