Firefighter killed in snowboarding accident in Central California.

There’s shock on the Central and South Coasts over the death of an off-duty firefighter in a snowboarding accident.

Santa Barbara County firefighter Joey DeAnda died Saturday at the China Peak Mountain Resort, in Fresno County.

Fresno County Sheriff’s deputies say DeAnda was traveling down a ski run when he hit a tree. He was wearing a helmet, but the injuries were too severe for the 33-year-old man to survive.

He had been a firefighter since 2020. Before joining the fire department, he had worked as a paramedic, and as a dispatcher with the Santa Barbara County Sheriff’s Office.
