This was the latest in a series of events intended to reduce gun violence.

A program to try to get some of the guns off the streets on the South Coast is being called a big success, with hundreds of weapons collected over the weekend.

238 guns were turned in during the gun buyback event in Santa Barbara. People turned in a wide variety of firearms in exchange for gift cards. The weapons recovered include some assault rifles.

The Coalition Against Gun Violence organized Saturday’s event at the Earl Warren Showgrounds. More than 1,400 guns have now been collected during six buyback events in Santa Barbara during the last few years.

The weapons were handed over to Santa Barbara Police for destruction.
