Move impacts three campuses on Central, South Coasts

The state’s two public university systems are planning to require students and staff members to receive COVID-19 vaccinations before return to on campus classes and activities this fall.

It’s a huge move involving the state’s 33 major public university campuses, a list which includes UC Santa Barbara, Cal State Channel Islands in Camarillo, and Cal Poly San Luis Obispo. All students, faculty and staff members will be required to have vaccinations by the start of the fall term.

There is a big “but”. The requirement is contingent one or more of the vaccines getting full FDA approval. The vaccines are currently being administered under emergency use authorizations.

It’s expected there will be exemptions allowed on medical or religious grounds.

UC and Cal State officials said they wanted to make the announcement early so they could discuss the situation with student, faculty, and staff representatives, as well as labor groups.
