Event Description

California Lutheran University presents "The Tournées Festival: New French Films on the CLU Campus," with 5 award-winning movies exploring integrity, compassion and diversity.

The schedule is as follows:

“Les Choristes (The Chorus)” - Wednesday, Oct. 1
Clément Mathieu, a music professor, arrives to teach “problematic boys” at a boarding school in this 2004 film. Winner of Academy Awards for Best Foreign Language Film and Best Song, “Les Choristes” explores the transcendence of music as the greatest form of expression.

“Fauteuils d’orchestre (Avenue Montaigne)” - Wednesday, Oct. 8
In this 2006 movie, a young woman arrives in Paris and finds a waitress job in a bar that caters to the surrounding theaters and the wealthy inhabitants of the area. She meets a pianist, a famous actress and a great art collector and becomes acquainted with the “luxurious” world her grandmother has told her about since her childhood.

“Un Long dimanche de fiançailles (A Very Long Engagement)” - Wednesday, Oct. 15
This 2004 film is set near the end of World War I in the deadly trenches of the Somme, the gilded Parisian halls of power, and the modest home of an indomitable provincial girl who is searching for her missing fiancé. It is an investigation into the arbitrary nature of secrecy, the absurdity of war and the human heart.

“Bamako” - Wednesday, Oct. 22
Melé, a bar singer, and her out-of-work husband, Chaka, are on the verge of breaking up in this 2006 movie. In the courtyard of the house they share with other families, a trial court has been set up. African civil society spokesmen have taken proceedings against the World Bank and the International Monetary Fund.

“La Môme (La Vie en rose)” - Wednesday, Oct. 29
This 2007 film looks at the life of the “Little Sparrow,” Edith Piaf. Discovered by a club owner who is soon murdered and coached by a musician who brings her to concert halls, she becomes famous. Her tragic love affair and the death of her only child belie the words of one of her signature songs, “Non, je ne regrette rien.”

This free event is open to the public.
