The Thousand Oaks Civic Arts Plaza Foundation presents Best of Doo Wop II.
Best of Doo Wop II features the music of the fabulous ’50s with Doo Wop legends and Rock ‘n’ Roll Hall of Famers: The Buck Ram Platters, The Olympics, Kathy Young, The Cadets, and the Tribute groups of The Drifters and the Crystals. The performers are accompanied by the American Gold Band, along with host John Wing.
The Buck Ram Platters are one of the most popular and most revered vocal groups of the Doo Wop era. They had numerous hits including “Only You”, “The Great Pretender”, “Smoke Gets in Your Eyes” and “My Prayer” to name just a few. Buck Ram, who created the Platters, always made sure the group possessed the essence, class and spirit that continues to shine in their performances.
The Olympics recorded several huge hits in the late ’50s and early ’60s. Their most memorable include “Western Movies”, “The Bounce” and “Hully Gully” which helped to initiate the Hully Gully dance craze of the early sixties. The group continues to dazzle audiences across the United States with their high-energy act.
Kathy Young was nicknamed the “Cinderella of Show Business,” as she was just 15 when her she rose to the top of the charts with her hits “A Thousand Stars” and “Happy Birthday Blues.”
The Cadets began as a gospel group, the Santa Monica Soul Seekers, but later they decided to switch to the popular R &B and Doo Wop style. Their hits “Stranded in the Jungle” along with “Why Don’t You Write Me” became classic recordings of the era.
The Drifters Tribute features several great hits including “Under The Boardwalk”, “On Broadway”, “This Magic Moment” and “Save The Last Dance For Me”.
The Crystals Tribute rekindles the memories of when this famous all girl vocal group topped the charts with such hits as “He’s A Rebel”, “Da Doo Ron Ron” and “Then He Kissed Me”.
Single tickets are $35 and $45 with group discounts available.
