Event Description
The Santa Barbara Museum of Art presents Chinese New Year Free Family Day. Enjoy music, art activities, lion dancing, folk dancing, martial arts demonstrations and acrobatics at this Free Family Day celebrating Chinese New Year and the exhibition Everyday Luxury. The inviting program of activities is inspired by the traditional Chinese New Year holiday, historically the longest and most important celebration in the Chinese calendar. Chinese months are reckoned by the lunar calendar, with each month beginning on the darkest day. In China, people may take weeks of holiday from work to prepare for and celebrate the New Year.
In 2008, the celebration honors the year of the rat, illustrative of the legend that in ancient times Buddha asked all the animals to meet him on Chinese New Year. Twelve animals arrived, and Buddha named a year after each one. He announced that the people born in each animal's year would have some of that animal's personality. Those individuals born in the year of the rat, for instance, tend to be leaders, pioneers, and conquerors. They are charming, passionate, charismatic, practical and hardworking - and are also in good company.
