Event Description
Ojai Film Society is screening the movie The Darjeeling Limited.
Director Wes Anderson (The Royal Tenenbaums) offers yet another quirky tale of a family in turmoil. Francis is the eldest of three brothers, estranged since their father’s sudden death.
In an attempt to reunite the family, he invites Jack and Peter to join him on a train trip through India. It is supposed to be a spiritual quest, though Francis is forced to admit that his real goal is visiting their mother, who lives in a convent in the Himalayas.
Each brother is dealing with his own personal drama. Eldest brother Francis, a neurotic perfectionist and control freak, is recovering from a car accident that may have been an attempted suicide. Peter, who began to doubt his love for his wife after she announced her pregnancy, is contemplating divorce and Jack has girlfriend problems. The brothers create so much trouble that they are kicked off the train and left stranded, surrounded by a mountain of luggage – an apt metaphor for the state of their lives. It is only when they encounter a group of orphans and must offer their assistance that the brothers are able to come together. Perhaps, with a dead father and a cloistered mother, these young men feel a bond with the children.
Entertaining and engaging, this spunky spiritual adventure story is beautifully filmed; its exotic locale exquisitely frames the action and is integral to the story. It is a satisfying film, both for Anderson fans and for those new to his work.
Cost is $8.
