Event Description

Ojai Film Society is screening the movie Strange Culture.

Artist and college professor Steve Kurtz was preparing for an art exhibit concerning the rather unusual subject of genetically modified food when days before the show, his wife suddenly died of heart failure. He called 911 and when the paramedics came, their suspicions were aroused by the petri dishes and other scientific paraphernalia in the home.

They notified the FBI and within hours, Kurtz found himself under suspicion of bioterrorism. Investigators impounded his computers, his cat, even his wife’s body. He was held as a suspected terrorist and even today, he faces twenty years’ imprisonment. Because legal restrictions prevent Kurtz from discussing many aspects of his case, Leeson uses a collage of re-enactments, interviews and news clips to tell this compelling tale of government paranoia.

Thomas Jay Ryan’s portrayal of Kurtz has a sympathetic charm and the other actors, including Tilda Swinton and Peter Coyote, slip in and out of character, discussing their interpretations with Kurtz himself.
