Event Description

CLU Center for Equality and Justice and the Office of Student Leadership presents the Reel for Justice documentary series.

A director/producer and three CLU professors will lead discussions during the Reel Justice Documentary Series.

Reckless Indifference (2007) Lundring Event Center
Tuesday, Nov. 18
The film directed by William Gazecki tells the story of a brawl at the home of a teen-age drug dealer that resulted in the death of the dealer’s best friend, the son of a Los Angeles Police Department officer. One of the boys wielded a pocketknife to protect his younger brother and confessed to his crime. All four were sent to prison for life without parole. Reckless Indifference reveals the naiveté, guilt and denial of families caught up in the criminal justice system and chronicles how a prosecutorial team propelled by the grief-stricken LAPD officer’s family used an obscure law to its advantage. Bob Meadows, a criminal justice professor, will introduce the film.

Well-Founded Fear (2000)
Tuesday, Jan. 27
This documentary directed by Michael Camerini and Shari Robertson provides an in-depth look at the asylum process of the federal U.S. Immigration and Naturalization Service. If a foreigner living in the United States establishes a “well-founded fear” of his home country, the immigration officer approves his application. If the officer doesn’t think the person’s case meets the definition, it is referred to an immigration judge for a decision. Don Waisanen, a communication instructor, will lead a faculty panel discussion on the film.

The series will continue with Sicko on Feb. 17, The Gleaners and I on March 3 and Go Further on April 14.

Admission is free. The Reel Justice Documentary Series features films that touch on the themes of equality and social justice.
