Mon, Sep 22, 2008 at 6:00pm
Oxnard Library, Meeting Room B, 251 South A Street, Oxnard
Event Description
The Oxnard Library presents an eveing with Brian Fagan, Phd. as he speaks on The Great Warming: Climate Change and the Rise and Fall of Civilizations.
Dr. Fagan will give a slideshow presentation on climate changes which occurred during the Medieval Warm Period and discuss their effects on civilizations around the world.
As you journey with Dr. Fagan throughout the medieval world, you will hear stories of peasants, Norse seafarers, Mayan lords, Polynesian voyagers, and Genghis Khan, the self-proclaimed “Flail of God.”
There will be some unexpected lessons about climate change along the way, and an implication for our future which Dr. Fagan refers to as “the silent elephant in the climatic room.”
Following this discussion, Dr. Fagan will sign his latest book “The Great Warming: Climate Change and the Rise and Fall of Civilizations,” copies of which will be available for sale on site by the Friends of the Library.
Brian Fagan was born in England and trained in archaeology and anthropology at Pembroke College, Cambridge. He spent seven years working in museums and research institutes in Central and Eastern Africa. He was a Professor of Anthropology at the University of California, Santa Barbara, until he retired in 2003. He has written over forty books on archaeology and history and is expert at communicating archaeology to general audiences. He has appeared on radio and television talk shows -- most recently on The Daily Show with Jon Stewart.
