Black Drawings - Art Exhibit
Saturday, Aug. 16, through Sunday, Sept. 14
California Lutheran University, 60 W. Olsen Road, Thousand Oaks
Event Description
CLU presents a series of drawings that focus on the biblical story of Abraham's family and the Palestinian Intifada at the Kwan Fong Gallery, entitled, “Black Drawings” by Artist Duncan Simcoe.
Duncan Simcoe’s “The Black Drawings” will be displayed from Saturday, Aug. 16, through Sunday, Sept. 14, in Kwan Fong Gallery of Art and Culture. An opening reception will be held at 3 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 16.
The works explore the way large stories or myths play upon and intervene in contemporary experience. Simcoe, a visual arts professor at California Baptist University in Riverside, initially focused on the story of Abraham and Ishmael from the Book of Genesis in the series. His more recent works respond to the Palestinian Intifada.
The artist began the drawings by collecting images of boxers by Goya. Looking for something that could be dark like Spanish artist’s paintings, Simcoe decided to produce his brush drawings on tar paper. As Simcoe continued, he began to work with more generalized thoughts about sibling relatedness and the way these stories can jump the track of time and place.
The Kwan Fong Gallery, located in Soiland Humanities Center on Memorial Parkway, is open to the public from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. Monday through Saturday.
