UC Santa Barbara Law and Society Program, The Rape Crisis Center of Santa Barbara and The Survivors Alliance and Franciscan Exchange Network present Benedict XVI and the Crisis of Clergy Abuse: The Question of Change in the Catholic Church, a speaking engagement. This event features Olan Horne, Founding member of Boston’s victim support group, The Survivors of Joseph Birmingham.
Olan Horne, one of six survivors of clergy sexual abuse who met privately with Pope Benedict XVI on his recent trip to the United States in April, will discuss this historic encounter, its impact on future dialogue with the Church leadership, and the practice of restorative work as a tool for justice and healing. Is the Catholic Church capable of real change? What are the implications of the Vatican’s acknowledgement of this crisis? How has the Church abuse scandal affected us as a culture? Mr. Horne will draw upon his personal experiences, as well as his interactions with numerous victims, advocates, and Church leaders, to help explore these and other issues. Please Note: There will be ample time afterwards for audience questions.
Active in the survivor movement, Olan Horne has worked as a consultant for the mediation firm Commonwealth Mediation and Conciliation, Inc., in Brockton, Massachusetts, where he acted as a consultant to mediators and facilitated the aftercare, restorative component and closure of the settlement process. He travels the country on speaking engagements to mental health professionals, clergy, Catholic Church organizations, child protection advocates and education programs, helping to identify the impact of childhood sexual abuse and encouraging research and awareness on the subject. He is the principal in a film with Showtime Productions, Our Fathers, an Emmy nominated original movie based on the book by David France.
Two events are scheduled: 6/20 at Faulkner Gallery and 6/21 at Bonaventure Hall.
