Event Description
The Santa Barbara Botanic Garden presents a Landscape Painting in the Garden workshop.
Join OAK Group artists Chris Chapman and John Iwerks for a morning landscape painting class in the Garden. The class begins with a short dual demonstration, followed by individual help at the easel. All media and skill levels welcome. Bring your own art supplies and sack lunch. Lunch at noon followed by constructive group critique.
The Oak Group is a dedicated organization of 24 plein-air artists who devote funds from exhibitions and sales to land conservation and preservation. They have contributed over $700,000 to groups including the Nature Conservancy, the Land Trust for Santa Barbara County, and the Marin Agricultural Land Trust. Among their current efforts is a project with the Nature Conservancy to preserve Santa Cruz Island. Chris Chapman and John Iwerks have a strong devotion to the Oak Group mission, and will share their painting expertise to help you capture the majesty of the natural world in plein-air landscape painting.
For lists of recommended supplies, please contact the Garden Education Program Coordinator at the phone number provided.
Bring your own supplies, equipment, and a lunch.
Chris Chapman's California landscapes are distinctive and direct, with an economy of means that is at the heart of her intention. A childhood spent on horseback, exploring foothills and orchards now gone to housing tracts, instilled in Chris a deep calling to beauty and solitude. This sense of stillness pervades her work. A native Californian, much of her work is grounded in her Santa Barbara home; nevertheless, Chris and her husband, painter John Iwerks, make regular painting excursions to a variety of California locales.
