Event Description

Ventura College, in recognition of National Earth Month and National Poetry Month presents an entire month of scheduled events. All are scheduled to take place on the Student Services Center patio as well, and are free. Parking on campus during the day is $1.

Monday, April 21 12 -12:45pm, 1:30 -2:30 pm.
Ventura College English instructor and poet Gwendolyn Alley will host California Poet Laureate and novelist Al Young. Mr. Young will read his work, discuss the role of poetics for change, and conduct a writing workshop in the second class. Mr. Young has written more than 20 books, including his most recent collection of poetry, The Sound of Dreams Remembered: Poems 1990-2000 (Creative Arts Book, 2001).

Monday, April 21 7pm
Reception for Mr. Young beginning Guthrie Hall, complete with jazz and choral music and refreshments. All events are open to the public and free of charge

Wednesday, April 9 12-12:45 pm and 2:00 -3:00 pm
Poetry and Discussion of Poetics and , Poetry plus a writing workshop, both events with poet Amalio Madueno of Taos, New Mexico, author of Lost in the Chamiso.

Monday, April 14 12-12:45 and 1:30- 2:30pm
Two events featuring poet Laynie Browne of Tucson, Arizona, author of Daily Sonnets and The Scented Fox, and winner of the National Poetry Series 2006. , Poetry and Discussion of Contemporary Sonnets from Poetry plus a writing workshop

Wednesday, April 23: 10:00 am—1:30 pm
Earth Action Day, Poets, Singers and Songwriters, Open Mic, non-fiction prose reading and discussion, CSUCI English professor Brad Monsma, author of Sespe Wild.

Thursday, April 10, from 1pm – 1:20pm, in Room AA8
Jessica Daniels will address green building programs and livable communities. After Ms Daniels received her master’s of regional planning from Cornell University, she joined Solimar, one of the nation’s leading land-use research and policy consulting firms. As the 2007 Solimar Fellow, she worked on a wide variety of projects involving demographics, housing, land conservation and smart growth policy.

Thursday, April 17, from 1pm – 1:20pm, in Room AA8:
Russell Galipeau, Channel Islands National Park Superintendent, will speak on resource management and wildlife ecology. A 27 year veteran of the National Park Service, Galipeau has also been the chief of resources management at Yosemite National Park and Wrangell-St. Elias National Park and Preserve in Alaska. Prior to that, he worked in the Everglades National Park and Canaveral National Seashore.

Thursday, April 24, from 12:30pm– 1:20pm, in Room SCI352:
Carl Morehouse, Planner and Ventura City Council Member, will discuss affordable housing, pedestrian and transit-oriented development and other planning issues. Now in his third term on the City Council, he previously served as Mayor. During his term he won the American Planning Association Distinguished Leadership Award for an Elected Official. He has been instrumental in the Faulkner House Group, Seize the Future citywide visioning, the Sustainability Council of Ventura County and the Ventura County Civil Alliance.

April 22 9 am – noon
And the Annual Ventura College Clean Up and Barbeque is set! Volunteers are welcome.
