Effort To Ban New Oil Drilling Off Section Of Santa Barbara County Coastline Fails

Posted on Wednesday, August 27, 2014 3:31pm

An effort by a state senator from Santa Barbara County to close the door on new oil drilling in state waters off the county’s coastline failed.

SB 1096 by Democratic State Senator Hannah-Beth Jackson of Santa Barbara would ban oil exploration in the Tranquillon Ridge area, off of Vandenberg Air Force Base.

There’s an existing ban on new drilling in state waters off the coast, but the Tranquillon Ridge are wasn’t included in the original legislation.

The State Assembly rejected the proposal by a narrow six vote margin.

The State Lands Commission rejected allowing new drilling in the Tranquillion Ridge area in 2009, but the issue has taken on an added urgency among environmentalists because there are some new proposals by oil companies to tap into the reserves.
