Associated Press Reporting Nuclear Expert Calling For Temporary Diablo Canyon Plant Shutdown

Posted on Monday, August 25, 2014 3:02pm

The Associated Press reports one of the federal government’s top nuclear experts believes that the Diablo Canyon nuclear power plant should be taken offline until the facility’s ability to stand up to earthquakes can be thoroughly assessed.

The AP obtained a confidential report it says came from Michael Peck, who was a lead inspector at Diablo Canyon for five years.

The report doesn’t say there are any existing safety issues with the plant.

But, it says the facility’s key equipment hasn’t been assessed to see whether it could withstand the shacking associated with a major earthquake.

PG&E officials say the Nuclear Regulatory Commission has thoroughly analyzed earthquake threats to Diablo Canyon, and demonstrated that it’s seismically safe.

There are multiple faults in the vicinity of the plant.
