An undercover sting operation targeted unlicensed contractors in eastern Ventura County, leading to ten arrests.
The State Contractors Licensing Board, and the Ventura County Sheriff’s Department used a house in Newbury Park to seek bids on project ranging from tree trimming, to kitchen cabinet replacement. If a project costs more than $500, contractors are required to have a state license. Investigators used referrals, and craigslist ads to invite bids for the work.
The ten were cited for contracting without a license, and nine of them were also charged with illegal advertising. The licensing is considered to be important protection for consumers to insure that they are working with qualified contractors, and if there are problems, the consumer then has some recourse.
