A marine biologist working in the Channel Island found a body on an isolated beach.
The biologist discovered the body late yesterday afternoon at Simonton Cove, on San Miguel Island. The indications are that the person may have died some time ago, because the body is badly decomposed.
National Park Service rangers, U.S. Naval Criminal Investigative Service agents, and the Santa Barbara County Sheriff’s Department are involved in the investigation. The Santa Barbara County Coroner’s Office is handling the autopsy.
The person hasn’t been identified yet.
The island has been closed to the public since last spring by the Navy, which says it wants to survey it for unexploded ordinance which may pose a risk to the public. It was once used as part of a military weapons testing range.
