Ventura Police say a daring auto thief who broke into a home to steal the car keys didn’t get far, but ended up destroying the vehicle in the process.
Police were called to a home on the 200 block of El Jardine Avenue just before 12:30 this morning by reports of a car being stolen.
Investigators say Daniel Zinn of Ventura used a hammer to break out the home’s front window, and get inside, where he found the car keys, and then fled in a Mini Cooper parked in the driveway.
Officers responding to the 911 call spotted the car, which led to a high speed chase on Main Street.
The 24 year old man tried to get onto the northbound 101 freeway, but lost control of the car, and smashed into a tree.
He was treated at a hospital for minor injuries, and then arrested for burglary, vehicle theft, and evading.
