A new law authored authored by a state senator from Santa Barbara County which expands paid family leave took effect today.

The legislation adds to the list of workers eligible for assistance under California’s Paid Family Leave program.  Workers who are caring for seriously ill grandparents, grandchildren, siblings, and in-laws are now eligible for assistance through the law, which was authored by Democratic State Senator Hannah-Beth Jackson of Santa Barbara.

The program is funded by employee payroll deductions through an expansion of the State Disability Insurance system.
