The Coast Guard has rescued a kayaker who had problems shortly into his ambitious plans to kayak from California to Hawaii.
The 57 year old man left Monterey on May 30th in a kayak equipped with solar panels to charge his electronics. However, last Saturday his solar system malfunctioned, and he turned back towards the mainland.
He became disoriented, and issued a distress call yesterday. A Coast Guard helicopter out of Los Angeles located the kayaker some 63 miles southwest of Point Conception, and directed the Coast Guard Cutter Aspen to the scene.
The man was uninjured, and in good health. His name isn’t being released.
