Two environmental groups say they will sue the federal government over what they claim are the unnecessary deaths of hundreds of endangered fish in Santa Barbara County.
California Trout, and the Environmental Defense Center have sent a notice of an intent to sue to the U.S. Bureau of Reclamation over pump failures which its contends led to the deaths of some steelhead trout in the Santa Ynez River watershed.
The Bureau is required to pump water into Hilton Creek to insure the survival, and reproduction of the fish.
The notice is a precursor to a lawsuit.
The environmental groups contend multiple pump failures disrupted the flow of water into the creek during the last year, killing more than 175 of the endangered fish.
They say just last week, more pump failures killed another 200 of the rare fish.
