A sting operation on the Central Coast caught eight stores selling tobacco items to minors.
The operation in San Luis Obispo County used underage decoys to try to buy tobacco products from stores in unincorporated parts of the county, including Nipomo, Oceano, Avila Beach, and Los Osos.
56 locations were targeted. Officials say the good news is this latest sting operation showed a drop in non-compliance with the law from nearly 26%, to around 14%.
The operation was a joint effort of the San Luis Obispo County Health Agency’s Tobacco Control Program, and the San Luis Obispo County Sheriff’s Department. The health agency is offering retailers a free program to help train staff on how to properly monitor tobacco sales.
