Federal legislation intended to address the relationship between mental health, and gun violence was introduced in Washington, D.C. today, with the Isla Vista rampage serving as a key motivation.

Democratic Congresswoman Lois Capps of Santa Barbara was one of the co-authors of what’s called the Promoting Healthy Minds for Safer Communities Act.

It includes strengthening firearms prohibitions, and protections for at-risk individuals, and expanding the sharing of mental health records with law enforcement databases.

Seven people died, and 13 were injured in the rampage one week ago in Isla Vista.
