Bill Co-Authored By Ventura County Legislator To Toughen Laws For Juvenile Rapists Passed By State Senate

Posted on Friday, May 30, 2014 1:56pm

The State Senate has passed legislation co-authored by a Ventura County assemblyman which would toughen penalties for juvenile rapists.

SB 838 would add a defenseless victim clause to state law, meaning those who sexually assault people unable to resists because they are intoxicated, incapacitated, or are developmentally disabled would face a minimum two year sentence.

Republican Assemblyman Jeff Gorell of Camarillo co-authored the bill, which has been called “Audie’s Law.”  It was prompted by the suicide of a Bay Area teen who killed herself after the three young men who sexually assaulted her received lenient sentences.

The legislation now goes to the State Assembly for consideration.
