Santa Barbara County Sheriff’s Deputies Arrest Man Armed With Knife, Crowbar After Confrontation

Posted on Sunday, May 11, 2014 12:57am

A man is behind bars in Santa Barbara County following a confrontation with Sheriff’s deputies, in which they say he was armed with a knife, and crowbar.

It happened at a home on the 4600 block of Morales Street in Cuyama.  A homeowner had given a transient, Stephen Howland, permission to stay in his backyard shop.  But, one of the residents found him tearing down their fence in the middle of the night, and feeding a bonfire which threatened their home.  When one of the homeowners tried to put out the fire with a garden hose, deputies say the 62 year old man hit her in the head with a board.

Deputies found Howland armed with a knife and crowbar when they arrived, but used a beanbag gun to stun, and safely arrest him.  He told investigators that he thought people were chasing him.  Howland is facing charges stemming from arson, to assault with a deadly weapon.
