Santa Barbara County is trying to educate employers about workers compensation insurance, and the fact employers by law are required to have it.
The County District Attorney’s Office mailed more than 7500 flyers to businesses in the county with information on the insurance, and their legal obligations related to it.
Businesses which aren’t in compliance can be fined, and owners can serve jail time.
And, businesses without the insurance can be financially devastated if they are hit by a major claim, but are unprotected. At the same time, the worker may be hard hit without the coverage they need for medical care, and living expenses while they are off the job.
