Posted on Wednesday, April 16, 2014 10:10pm

Hundreds of homes, and businesses were evacuated in Solvang Wednesday night after what’s described as potentially explosive military ordnance was found in the city’s downtown area.

The ordinance was discovered on the 1600 block of Copenhangen Drive at about 3:30 Wednesday afternoon.  The Santa Barbara County Sheriff’s Department Bomb Squad, and the Vandenberg Air Force Base Explosive Ordnace Disposal Team were called to investigate.

A reverse 911 call was made to about 400 homes, and businesses in the area, ordering evacuations, and that was later expanded at around 8 p.m. to hundreds of additional homes.  The evacuation area is south of Laurel Avenue, west of Alisal Road, north of Birch Drive, and east of 5th Street.

The Sheriff’s Department Search and Rescue Team went door to door to help with mandatory evacuation efforts.  The Red Cross set up an evacuation center at 1745 Mission Drive, in Solvang.

There’s no word on what type of device is being investigated, or how it got there.
