Santa Barbara County is being asked to do more to provide mental health services.
Dozens of people spoke about the issue at today’s County Board of Supervisors meeting, presenting a petition with hundreds of signatures calling for county action.
A lack of inpatient facilities in the county means some of those who are seriously mentally ill end up being housed in other counties, land on the streets, or, because they get in trouble with the law, wind up in jail.
Santa Barbara County’s jail system by default is currently the largest mental health care provider in the county, with a larger percentage of inmates receiving medication, or treatment as part of their incarceration.
County Supervisors promised they will take a comprehensive look at the issue.
