Effort By School Board Member In Ventura County To Recall Two Fellow Board Members Fails

Posted on Monday, March 31, 2014 2:30pm

An effort by a disgruntled school board member in Ventura County to recall two fellow members of the board has failed.

Simi Valley School Board member Dan White had sought to oust Rob Collins, and Debbie Sandland, but the effort failed to gather the 11,000 signatures needed to put the recall on the ballot.  If the measure had qualified for the ballot, it would have cost the already financially squeezed district more than a quarter of a million dollars for a special election.

It’s been a tough year for the district, which looked at closing three elementary schools in the face of declining enrollment to save money, but ultimately decided against closures.  The district then ended up shutting down Simi Elementary School because of safety concerns.  The board recently sent out layoff notices to dozens of teachers, as it tries to figure out how to close what could be a million dollar plus budget shortfall.
