Damage Caused In Northern California By 1964 Tsunami Generated By Alaska Earthquake

Today marks the 50th anniversary of the largest recorded earthquake to hit North America, a magnitude 9.2 quake which caused heavy damage throughout Alaska, and sent a tsunami to the West Coast.

The National Weather Service is using the anniversary to call attention to Tsunami Preparedness Week in California.

KCLU’s Lance Orozco talks to California’s state geologist, who talks about what you should known about being prepared, and how researchers are helping to get coastal facilities like harbors ready for the impacts of tsunamis.
