State Assemblyman To Hold Community Forum To Try To Prepare Community To Fight Possible Efforts To Close Naval Base Ventura County

Posted on Wednesday, March 26, 2014 12:02am

A state assemblyman in Ventura County says Naval Base Ventura County could once again be a target for closure, or consolidation, so he’s sponsoring a community forum to look at the concern.

Republican Assemblyman Jeff Gorell of Camarillo is holding the event April 25th at Cal State Channel Islands, and has lined up the Chairman of the House Armed Services Committee, Buck McKeon, to be the keynote speaker.  Gorell says that the base has been historically on the the list for the Base Realignment and Closure Process, commonly known as BRAC, and he thinks that is likely to happen again in the next few years.

The base is the county’s single largest employer, with 19,000 direct jobs, and many others which are heavily reliant on the facilities.
