One Hiker Dead, Second Seriously Injured In Santa Barbara Foothills

Posted on Tuesday, March 18, 2014 12:10am

One hiker is dead, and a second seriously injured after a hike in Santa Barbara County’s mountains turned into an ordeal.

The Santa Barbara County Sheriff’s Department is still trying to sort out exactly what happened, but a young woman, and man in their 20’s were apparently on Cold Springs Trial, near Tangerine Falls around 4 p.m. Sunday when they fell.

The woman broke both of her ankles, and her wrist, and the man broke his arm.  A little while later, the young man went to get help, but fell about 20 to 30 feet down a rocky ledge, and died.

At about 10:30 Monday morning, some other hikers spotted the young man’s body, and called 911.  It wasn’t until 4 p.m. Monday that yet another group of hikers stumbled across the injured young woman, and called for help.  She was airlifted to a hospital by helicopter.

The names of the hikers haven’t been released yet.
