Sections of three Central Coast beaches are being temporarily closed to the public starting this weekend, to protect the breeding habitat of some rare birds.
The Air Force is shutting down parts of Surf, Wall, and Minuteman beaches at Vandenberg Air Force Base starting Saturday, for Snowy Plover nesting season. The birds nest on sections of the beaches. The ban is intended to keep people from walking through the nesting habitat. Also banned on the beaches are horses, dogs, and the use of kites.
If there are excessive number of violations of the partial beach closure, Air Force officials say they will totally close the beaches. The closures are in effect through September 30th.
