A Ventura County man is dead, and five people are hurt after a wrong way driver on the 101 Freeway in Santa Barbara County caused a head-on accident.
It happened just after one this morning. CHP officers received reports a car was southbound on the northbound 101 in the Summerland area. Officers tried to intercept the car, but by the time they reached the scene it had hit clipped a car and continued south, where it smashed head on into a van near Santa Monica Road, in Carpinteria.
Both vehicles burst into flames, and the 44 year old old wrong way driver was trapped in his car, and fatally injured. One person in the van suffered serious injuries, while a second adult, and two children escaped with minor injuries. The driver of the car which was initially clipped suffered minor injuries as well.
The name of the man who died, who was a Newbury Park resident, hasn’t been released yet.
