A jail inmate on the Central Coast who was taken to a hospital because he appeared to be seriously ill from the flu has died.
Rudy Silva told San Luis Obispo County Jail staff last Thursday he didn’t feel well, and was taken to a hospital where he died yesterday. County Sheriff’s Department officials say Silva also had other medical issues, which may have contributed to his death.
He had been in jail for a felony charge of receiving stolen property, as well as for some misdemeanor counts. An autopsy is pending.
If the death is confirmed to be flu related, it will be the first in San Luis Obispo County this flu season. Santa Barbara, and Ventura County have each had one confirmed death.
