The Ventura City Council tonight is once again set to look at the issue of whether a church should be able to run a program for the homeless out of its facilities in a midtown neighborhood.
The Ventura Planning Commission denied a conditional use permit for Harbor Community Church to provide the services from his home base on the 3100 block of Preble Avenue.
The church is appealing the decision to the City Council.
The program has been operating without a permit for the past few years.
Some neighbors are upset, saying while the support for the homeless is important, the church’s effort is incompatible with the area. They cite concerns ranging from the proximity to a nearby school, to a spike in the number of auto burglaries.
