There’s some big news this morning for Santa Barbara County.
The County has received a second major grant for construction of new jail facilities, to help ease long running overcrowding problems.
The Board of State and Community Corrections awarded the county $38.9 dollars for a major addition to the new county jail which is already under construction in Santa Maria.
The new jail will have 376 beds, but the additional funding will allow the addition of 228 more.
The additional grant will allow construction of what’s called a “STAR” complex, with facilities and series intended to help inmates near release more successful transition to a successful life in the outside world.
The grant covers 90% of the cost of the “STAR” facility, so the county only had to put up $3.9 million dollars.
