Santa Barbara County Sheriff’s deputies say they broke up a cockfighting operation, seizing 19 roosters, and citing four people.
Deputies received reports Sunday morning of a large number of cars on private property near Santa Maria Airport. When they arrived, more than two dozen people fled the scene on foot, but four were detained.
Deputies say the recovered items used for cockfighting, and gambling. Two of the 19 roosters they seized had to be euthanized, because of injuries they had received while fighting.
Two people were cited for possession of fighting bids, and trespassing, and two others were cited for trespassing.
