The family of a man who was shot to death in a confrontation with a Santa Barbara Police officer has filed a claim of the use of excessive force against the city, settling the stage for a lawsuit.
Brian Tacadena died September 1st, after being shot multiple times on the 1300 block of De La Vina Street.
Officers had been responding to reports of a man acting aggressively, as if he was on drugs.
An arriving officer said Tacadena was armed with a knife, and refused to stop advancing despite multiple orders for him to surrender.
An investigation by the Santa Barbara County District Attorney’s Office concluded that the shooting was justified, noting that multiple witnesses confirmed the officer account of what occurred.
Tacadena had a history of mental health issues, and drug abuse, and had methamphetamine in his system at the time he was shot to death.
The family is seeking $10 million dollars in its lawsuit.
