A cut in services by the Santa Barbara County Sheriff’s Department has had a huge impact on some other law enforcement agencies.
More than two years ago, the department reduced its Santa Maria jail from 24/7, to part time operation.
The result is law enforcement officers in Northern Santa Barbara County trying to book people arrested into jail now often drive them to Santa Barbara, taking the officers off the streets for hours.
KCLU’s Lance Orozco reports County Supervisors decided to dip into their reserve fund to ease the situation,
