City Of Santa Barbara Set To Settle Controversy About Proposed Affordable Housing Complex

Posted on Tuesday, November 26, 2013 12:46am

The City of Santa Barbara is set to settle a controversy surrounding a proposed new affordable housing complex proposed for the city.

People’s Self Help Housing wants to build a 40 unit apartment complex, with a 3300 square foot community center on the 500 block of North Salsipuedes Street.

The project was scaled down to its current size during multiple Architectural Board of Review hearings, and other concessions were made to try to make it more compatible with the area.

However, after getting the final board approval it needed, a neighbor appealed, expressing concern that the development is still too large, didn’t get proper review, and that there might be inadequate fire lane access.

City planners are recommending the rejection of the appeal, but the City Council is set to decide the issue this afternoon.
