A congresswoman who represents most of our region is calling for a federal moratorium on offshore oil fracking, until a through environmental review can be completed.
Democratic Congresswoman Lois Capps of Santa Barbara approached the Department of the Interior, and Environmental Protection Agency about a freeze in federal waters on the controversial practice used to free trapped underground oil, and gas deposits.
Capps notes information made public through the Freedom of Information Act shows there have been more than a dozen documented uses of fracking in the Santa Barbara Channel in the last two decades.
Fracking is largely unregulated. Environmental groups have expressed concern it could pollute underground water supplies when it’s done onshore, and cause undersea pollution offshore. Oil and gas industry officials say the practice has been safely used for years.
