Central Coast City Sued Over Invocations At Council Meetings

Posted on Wednesday, November 6, 2013 3:20pm

A Madison, Wisconsin group has sued a Central Coast City, claiming its City Council violated the state constitution during invocations during its meeting.

The Freedom From Religion Foundation filed suit against the City of Pismo Beach, in action instigated by an atheists group in San Luis Obispo.

Pismo Beach has an official city chaplain, and the suit claims since 2008, that more than 120 invocations concluded “In the name of God,” and that the Bible was quoted more than 80 times.

The lawsuit claims that the prayers further the appearance that the government endorses and supports Christianity.

City officials say that council meetings have closely followed a policy of being non-sectarian, and that the suit will fail if it’s pursued.
