More than 700 flights were affected after a man armed with an assault rifle opened fire at an LAX terminal this morning, making his way through a TSA screening area, and into the gate area of Terminal 3 before he was stopped following a gunfight with airport police.
One person has been confirmed dead, with six injured taken to hospitals. The TSA says multiple members of its staff at the airport are among the victims.
The gunman was seriously wounded.
Nearly 50 flights headed to LAX were diverted to other airports. with a total of 746 affected. Airport officials say an hours long hold around the country on flights being allowed to leave for LAX was lifted at around 4 p.m., and departures expected to resume sometime this evening.
Airport officials are advising anyone with a scheduled flight from LAX to check with their airline first, because of the large number of outbound flights cancelled, or delayed.
